Company History

At the age of 18, Aloha Green proprietor Steve Shropshire already had an idea of what he wanted to create when he left his family home in Florida and pursued his professional interest in Alaska. With perseverance and determination, Steve proceeded to create what is known today as the largest nursery business in Alaska, Green Connection. It was there that Steve became familiar with the Big Island when he began importing tropical plants to meet the growing US mainland market demand for tropical foliage.

“What I could see was a superior quality of plants, grown in Hawaii, particularly on the Big Island. The combination of nutrient rich top soil and volcanic cinder, coupled with the right balance of tropical rain and sunshine provided a perfect climate for the production of strong, healthy green plants,” said Shropshire. Steve made his first trip to the Big Island with his wife and knew that some day he would return to Hawaii to live.

During the mid eighties, it was difficult to find a steady supplier for Hawaiian plants, so he established Aloha Green. In 1998, Steve sold Green Connection and moved to Hawaii, with his family to continue his agricultural venture full-time, Aloha Green Plants exporting his own tropical foliage to the Far East and US mainland markets.

As past Chairman of the Anchourage Chamber of Commerce (1990), Steve directed business leaders to support the creation of new local economic opportunities for small business and to contribute to the welfare of rural communities in Alaska.

As founder of a state-wide environmental initiative Green Star, he continued to demonstrate his personal commitment to manage a successful business while using principles and values that would integrate the social, economic, and cultural preservation needs of community.

Steve is married to Beth Ann Shropshire, an interior designer, and has two children, Dylan age 15, and daughter Julia age 9.
